A Book Review by Karen Sweeny-Justice
Anyone looking to submit stories to Red Dress Ink or Avon Trade will certainly enjoy reading See Jane Write – A Girl’s Guide to Writing Chick Lit by Sarah Mlynowski and Farrin Jacobs. Not only is this how-to a fast paced, enjoyable instruction manual, but a resource with lots of insights.
Trade paperback sized, and printed in teal ink with lots of pink pages, the authors devote time to defining the chick-lit genre in a breezy conversational tone that fits perfectly with their subject. Mlynowski and Jacobs, a bestselling author and editor, respectively, give plenty of first person insight in publishing a tale that doesn’t necessarily have the romantic happy-ever-after ending.
The duo discuss the importance of characterization, plotting, and pacing, as well as point of view, tone and finding the right voice to use. An entire chapter is devoted to grammar and punctuation, giving this book something that most writing books seem to skip over. Charts and call-outs abound, along with some cute illustrations. A bibliography is included, too, along with a list of chick-lit authors, their titles and publishers.
See Jane Write is from Quirk Books, and is copyrighted 2006. It retails for $14.95, and is 192 pages long.
